Datawallet

In 2018 Cointelegraph Japan worked with the digital wallet company Datawallet to promote their launch in Japan. Along with a few press release images, Datawallet requested we make a few extra pieces they could use for later promotions. This also meant images breaking from the typical Cointelegraph style I'd become used to. They also wanted something extra, that would really have a sort of flair on any webpage.

The Challenge

Initially, I thought about making a single infographic, combining the five points that Datawallet wanted us to fulfill. Although the original press release wanted to use the images as breaks between the article so they needed to work on their own. I sketched out a few characters, riffing on a simple cartoon style often seen in Japanese clip art. To save on time, I opted to keep it black and white. After I made the gradient background using colors provided I realized that would make a great fill to give the characters some color. I played around with the outlines: inverting the black lines to white and adjusting which parts would be transparent. Originally I had a man, a boy, a woman, a buddha, and an older woman. To better fit the demographic, we adjusted the older woman to be another male character, slightly more modern than the first. The final ingredient was movement. Each design needed to loop without being annoying to look at, so I kept the parts simple. However, the movement still fits the ambiance of each character. For example, the increasing profits of the man are staccato and exciting, while the various user information is floating harmoniously with the buddha.
