Dr. Seuss Covers

In my junior year of college I took a watercolor course. More interested in the patterns the ink would make after water dried, I first experimented with minimalism, pairing ethereal colors with stark oblong framing choices. Around that time I got the idea to explore how minimalism might affect the parts of pop culture in my life. I started with Dr. Suess books and found it a fitting contrast to the looping verses of his stories.

The Challenge

To start I kept the colors from the original and tried to place them into a flat structure that felt consistent. For each cover, though, I added more and more elements until I felt satisfied with the result. I found that minimalism certainly has its place, and isn't best suited for all situations. With the Sneetches and One Fish, Two Fish I also realized that minimalism doesn't require a lack of other elements like depth and value. This small project became a needed lesson for other works, especially ones that required a lot of information in a tiny amount of space.
